Kittens on the Edge: A Dramatic Rooftop Rescue

Recently, our rescue team faced an urgent and heart-wrenching situation. Some kittens were spotted high up climbing in and out of the windows on the roof of a building in Beckenham, a very dangerous position. Despite our centers being full to capacity, we couldn’t bear to see these innocent creatures in such peril.
When our team arrived at the scene, we quickly realized that using a ladder was far too dangerous to save the kittens. Thanks to the cooperation of the landlord and some very kind tenants—despite a language barrier—we obtained a key to what we suspected was the room where the kittens were seen entering. It turned out to be a small cabinet sized storage closet. This closet was filled to the rafters with rubbish, and the mum cat and her kittens were using a broken windowpane to climb in and out, which was extremely hazardous. Upon entering the cupboard space, we managed to retrieve two kittens, but the mum cat had already moved the other four.
Before we left for the evening we laid a piece of wood to cover the broken glass window and prevent any kittens from getting hurt. We also left food at the site and with the tenants to help lure the mum and kittens back in. That evening mum returned crying out for her rescued kittens—a heart-wrenching sight indeed, absolutely dreadful to hear.
Thankfully when we returned the next day, we found all four kittens back inside the closet along with their mum, who is a very friendly cat. We were able to safely capture all six kittens and the mum cat before any tragic accidents could occur. They are now safe at our Lewisham Centre.
The journey for this precious family is far from over.
While we have rescued these kittens from immediate danger, their journey to finding loving homes is just beginning. They will need medical check-ups, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and lots of socialization to prepare them for adoption.
