Abandoned mother cat and kittens

One might call it a miracle that a woman and her son happened to be looking out of their window on Fernhill Street in E16 at the precise moment when a man in a light blue Skoda Octavia pulled onto the dead-end street and proceeded to toss a mum and two baby kittens out of the car and onto the pavement next to a tall palisade fence. On one side of the fence is a residential street, but had Mum jumped through the fence to the other side, it surely would have been a death sentence as DLR tracks lie stretching 200 yards in either direction and City Airport is just behind that!
There are some acts so heartless, that it’s hard for us to think about people actually doing them. It’s unthinkable to imagine the mindset of someone who would commit such an act.
In a terrible twist to the story, just as the man drove away, the skies parted and a torrential rain began. The woman that had been watching from her house window rushed out to grab the cats but was only able to grab one of the kittens in time. The mum and the other kitten were so frightened by the storm and the loud noise of the DLR and neighboring airport, they quickly scurried out of sight and disappeared.
For two relentless days, our rescue team battled through the rainstorm that seemed unyielding, persistently searching for the distressed mother cat and her remaining vulnerable kitten. Despite the torrential downpour lasting more than 24 hours, they refused to relent, returning each time completely drenched but determined!
Sightings began to come through of the mum cat in the wee hours of the mornings around 4am, presumably as it was so quiet at the time without the banging of the DLR and the airport. Simon, a member of our rescue team drove to the site at that early hour for two consecutive nights, absolutely committed to the rescue.
The mum cats’ cries were eventually heard coming from a garden that backed onto the dead-end street. The kind man who owned the property granted access to our rescue team and joined in the pursuit of the search. Just as it would seem the garden turned up empty, the man remembered a stack of pallets around the side of the property. Bless them, Mum and kitten were found huddled together amongst the pallets.

All three have now been reunited and are enjoying the warmth, safety and all the love our Canning Town staff and volunteers have to give.
One of the kittens is suffering from an eye infection and is being closely monitored by our veterinary staff. All three cats will be treated and restored back to health before they are put up for rehoming.
