Blackie

Our Lewisham team were contacted by local residents concerned about the plight of a stray or abandoned cat who was in very poor condition. “Blackie” had lots of flies around him and large matted balls of fur under his neck. Worried residents bought some cat food that he was very happy to eat but were understandably worried about the amount of flies and sores on his back, Blackie was quite nervous so they could not pick him up to take him anywhere for help.

Kelley from our Lewisham team attended and with the aid of some tasty food was able to lure him into a cat trap and brought him to our Lewisham veterinary clinic.

“Blackie” was found to have severe dental disease and badly infected sore gums, our vets had to remove 14 teeth leaving only his canines and incisors. He had severe gingival hyperplasia and biopsies were sent back but the result is several inflammation. He has tested positive for calici virus which can cause severe gingivitis. Now that his teeth have been removed though his gums will settle down and he will be feeling a lot more comfortable, he is currently eating wet food but in the longer term his gums should harden and he should be able to eat wet and dry food.
He has been treated with a course of antibiotics and pain relief following his dental work. Our vets also neutered and microchipped him and treated for fleas and worms and dematted his fur.

Blackie is an older cat who appears to have been living stray for a long time, we are hopeful that in time he will begin to realise that humans can be kind and that he will decide to trust us but for now he is recovering from all his treatment and needs some time to heal and get to know us.

We have been heartened by the kindness and concern of local residents for Blackie, he is very fortunate in that people took the trouble to seek help for him.
