A tale of ten

Our Lewisham Centre came to the aid of a heavily pregnant cat from a shop on Deptford High Street as she was unwanted by her owners who lived on the street. Thankfully, some compassionate souls from a shop a few doors down had noticed her plight and decided to offer her refuge. We were contacted when it appeared she was soon to give birth and our rescue worker, James went to collect her.
Just two days in and she went into into labour, giving birth to ten kittens, a huge number for one litter. Most mum cats give birth to between two and six kittens per litter. Sadly, two of the kittens died within the first day, leaving eight kittens.
With such a large litter comes increased responsibility, including the need for ample food to nourish and sustain the growing family. Feeding ten hungry mouths is no small task! The family are now being cared for by one of our wonderful volunteer foster homes.
