These two beautiful brothers were rescued by CHAT. They have now been homed.

Strays of the Month - Canning Town, London

CANNING TOWN BRANCH
151-153 Barking Road, Canning Town, London, E16 4HQ
Tel: 020 7474 8811 (Weekdays, 9am - 5.30pm)
Email: canningtown@celiahammond.org

On this page we feature some of the animals in our care who really deserve a new, loving home, but who have so far been overlooked.

PLEASE NOTE: All potential homes are visited by a member of our rehoming team prior to rehoming any of our rescued animals. Due to our limited resources, we are ONLY able to home animals from the Canning Town Clinic in areas adjacent to this rescue centre, i.e. all 'E' postcodes (E1 to E18), 'RM' postcodes as far as Chafford Hundred, all 'IG' postcodes, also N1, N4, N5, N7, N16 and N17.

If you are outside CHAT's catchment areas, and wish to adopt a rescue cat, find a rescue centre near you at: catchat.org

Pansy, Penny and Patsy are seeking a new home, see their story further down this page.....

FEBRUARY 2010

HOMES NEEDED!!!

Canning Town Branch is continuing to be inundated on a daily basis with calls to rescue stray and unwanted cats and is full to capacity - as fast as we rehome the animals in our care more arrive, it is a constant battle to manage to find space to accommodate them all.

It is now late kitten season but we are still taking in slightly bigger kittens 3, 4 and 5 months old and their mum's.

We have lots of lovely young adult cats and a few elderly cats needing new homes, there are more cats that are not yet featured on our web page so get in touch and see if we have that special companion for you!

Following our appeal for volunteer photographers to help with taking photo's of cats at Canning Town Branch to be featured on this webpage we were very pleased to receive three offers of help!

Sunniva Molvaer has very kindly been in and met our cats and taken some beautiful photo's of them, the photos with 'SM' in the corner were taken by Sunniva and some are now featued on this page. Sunniva has offered that for anyone rehoming one of the animals she has photographed she would be very happy to send them a high quality copy of their new pets photo. Sunniva has also posted the cats photo's on her blog: (http://cynosurephotography.blogspot.com/)
We think Sunniva's photo's of our rescue cats are really stunning. Sunniva is a student photographer and now visits Canning Town Branch every weekend to take these beautiful photographs of our cats.

Shortage of towels and bedding

We are running short of small clean blankets and towels of all sizes at all our centres. If you live close to any of our centres or Head Office, and have blankets or towels you could donate, please do drop them in. However, we are not able to accept duvets or pillows.

Sam

SAM 5th FEB: HOMED!

15th JAN: NEW ARRIVAL:

Sam has endured a horrendous ordeal and we are all hoping that he will pull through.

Sam is a tame kitten who was deliberately thrown down a rubbish chute at a tower block into a communal waste skip.
The skip was emptied by a compactor lorry which then drove to a local waste transfer site where the contents were tipped out onto the ground.
A digger was then used to shovel the waste across the ground where to the drivers horror a tabby kitten staggered out of the rubbish.

He was brought straight to our veterinary clinic where it is clear that he has suffered a blow to the head, he is being treated and we are all desperately hoping that he will recover.

Sam's fur absolutely stank of rubbish, we think that he may have spent a couple of days in the communal skip.

Updates on Sam's progress to follow.....

18th JAN: We are pleased to report that Sam is making good progress, we were worried that he was blind, but he can now see and is bruising and swelling is subsiding. More progress reports to follow soon.....

To enquire about Sam, or to find out about other animals at Canning Town, please telephone 0207 474 8811 or send CHAT an email [Please include a contact phone number]

Sam, 72 hours after being rescued. 18th Jan: 72 hours later, and after treatment, Sam is showing some signs of improvement and seems to be regaining his sight after his head trauma.

He is not quite "with it" at the moment, though, and we need to wait and see to what extent he will regain all his faculties.

Sam and his new friend

30th Jan: Sam and new friend.....

UPDATE 30th JAN: Sam is continuing to make progress, although he is not 100% fully recovered. It may be that he will require an indoor only home but a little more time will tell.

Meanwhile Sam has a new friend - an 8 week old female kitten and they will be seeking a new home together.

Further updates on Sam's progress to follow soon.....

UPDATE 5th FEB: GOOD NEWS SAM AND HIS NEW FRIEND HAVE FOUND A NEW HOME!
Katie

KATIE PRIORITY - 20th JAN: URGENTLY NEEDS A HOME NOW AS AN ONLY CAT!

Katie was living as a stray struggling to survive with an old badly healed fractured hip when she gave birth to a litter of kittens in a garden.
Katie and her kittens were cared for in a foster home. Katie was a very good mum and has reared her kittens , we had intended to home her with two of them but since having her operation to fix her leg she unusually turned against her kittens and the decision was taken to rehome her as an only cat.

Katie's fosterer tells us: "Katie is a very, very sweet and friendly young cat.
She is fully recovered and enjoys the outdoors and playing. However, I would think it best she not go to a home with young children."

JAN 20th: A NEW UPDATE FROM KATIE'S FOSTER CARER: Katie has been with me now since June last year! As much as I love her I really need to get her rehomed now! Katie and my own cat Tippi really do not get on well. I think Katie is getting bullied by one of the local toms and she then takes it out on Tippi. She is also determined to be number 1 in my affections and has succeeded in taking over my bedroom (and bed) as her territory. This is a real shame for Tippi who used to sleep next to me at night and now won't even come up the stairs.
First thing in the morning Katie waits for me to stir and then appears by my head demanding I give her a head rub whilst she purrs her heart out. Only when she has had a good 5 minutes attention does she try to get me to feed her. She then waits for me to put food out for the birds so she can go outside to watch the squirrels eat it (fortunately she has never tried to catch one). She is a super cat and will make someone a lovely companion but as the only cat in the household.

To enquire about Katie, or to find out about other animals at Canning Town, please telephone 0207 474 8811 or send CHAT an email [Please include a contact phone number]

Peaches and Pixie

PEACHES AND PIXIE (fostered)

Peaches is a friendly young mum who is seeking a home with her daughter Pixie.

Pixie was born without upper eyelids, this resulted in her fur scratching her eyes every time she blinked, her eyes were really sore. Pixie has had an operation to temporarily roll back the skin above her eyes. When she is bigger she will require another operation to create two upper eyelids.
Our vets will perform this operation but in the meantime Peaches and Pixie are ready to go to a new home.

Update 18th Nov: Pixie has had an operation to try and create upper eyelids but it has not been totally successful, she is now waiting for a second operation by an eye specialist.

George and Ella

GEORGE AND ELLA

This pair of cats are seeking a new home together.

George and Ella are both very nervous, they came to us seperately but now snuggle up together.
George is from the Holiday Inn in Kensington where he had been living in the gardens and was feed by an American Airlines hostess who regulary stayed there when she flew in from Los angeles.

Ella was another frightened little stray who was living all by herself.

With a lot of work and patience and the right person they would be suitable for a home, but it may take weeks or even months before they will be really responsive to people.

Updates on their progress to follow...

Update 3rd June: George and Ella are still very nervous and we think they would be better suited to a semi-feral home such as a stables, smallholding or large garden. They will require good quality regular food and dry shelter but will act as a rodent patrol in return.

To enquire about these cats, or to find out about other animals at Canning Town, please telephone 0207 474 8811 or send CHAT an email [Please include a contact phone number]

Spencer was feeling rather lonely so we have paired him up with a young white female cat. Miff is a similar age and was originally a stray who was rescued from a balcony that she was living on. Miff is quite shy.

An understanding adult home is sought for these two.

Muffin and Cookie

COCO, MUFFIN AND COOKIE 8th FEB: HOMED!

Coco

This is Coco and her son - Muffin and daughter - Cookie.

Coco was living stray in some gardens trying to raise her young kittens.

We were called in to rescue them by kind householders who were feeding them.

One of our rescue team attended at 7 a.m at feeding team so that he could catch the kittens by tempting them with some tasty food as they were too shy to just pick up.

As Coco and her three kittens approached to everyones horror a fox dashed out and snatched a kitten and ran off with it out of sight. Nothing could be done, the kitten was gone.

Eventually a distressed Coco and her two remaining kittens were captured and brought to safety.

We would like to reassure anyone reading this that foxes are rarely a risk to a healthy adult cat and will usually back down confronted by an adult cat. Young kittens and frail elderly adult cats are a target for hungry foxes who cannot easily find alternative food. This is one reason we always tell people adopting kittens from us to keep them indoors only until 6 months old so that they are of a size to not be an easy target.

Coco is a friendly but quiet mum cat who enjoys sitting on peoples laps, her kittens are a little shy but can be handled easily and are quickly getting used to us.

They are seeking a home as a trio. A home with a garden is sought.

UPDATE 8th FEB: GOOD NEWS THESE THREE HAVE FOUND A NEW HOME!

To enquire about Coco, Muffin and Cookie, or to find out about other animals at Canning Town, please telephone 0207 474 8811 or send CHAT an email [Please include a contact phone number]
