PERSIAN RESCUE

Please help!

Persian Rescue - 28-06-2009

We have just finished a dramatic rescue here at Greenacres Sanctuary. We had 2 days to remove 50 Persian cats, 4 dogs, 30-40 koi carp & 1 Pigeon.

It was a situation we have seen only too often in recent months, the owners of the animals property was in the process of being repossessed, and despite all their efforts trying to find homes for all the animals, they had no luck anywhere.

We had a phone call, and we just couldn't say no to these helpless animals. Our rescue team headed by Sarah Le Fevre and Carolyn McBeath sprang into action to get the animals out in time. Of course, all the staff back at the sanctuary were busy making room, and erected temporary pens and enclosures to house the animals.

After a sweltering 15 hour day, all the animals had been caught, assessed, and moved to the sanctuary.

Sadly for the cats, most have quite heavily matted coats, so the long process of de-matting is now under way. We of course have to neuter, microchip, vaccinate, health check, flea and worm all 50 cats.

On a happy note, we have managed to re-home all 4 dogs, and the koi carp have found various new ponds to live in.

We are stretched to the limit at Greenacres at the moment, can you spare any blankets, feed bowls, beds, toys, scratch posts, food, litter and litter trays? Perhaps you have some free time and could help socialize or groom the cats?

Any help would gratefully recieved, please Tel: 01424 882198

Goats!!!

Pygmy Goats!!!!

We have just taken in two lovely five year old pygmy goats to join our two old boys in our goat paddock. We have Basil, which is the black one in the picture and Billy Junior which is the white and tan.

We have been hard at clearing and extending the goat paddock so they have a larger area to munch on, fallen trees to climb and lots of nice undergrowth to rummage around in. Hopefully this will provide more enrichment for the goats so they can forage and behave as they would in their natural environment.

PS We are not able to accomodate any more farm animals at the sanctuary so please dont ask as the answer will be no.

Free To Roam- The Puppy Farm Cats Story

The remaining Easter Sunday Puppy Farm rescue cats have been released to roam our 12 acre Sanctuary!

Please Click Here to view their original story.

Of the initial 40 rescued ginger and white cats, 18 remained in the cattery. One of the difficulties in re-homing these cats, was always their very nervous nature along with the fact that all the remaining 18 cats are polydactyl. This means they all have extra toes, which can lead to ingrowing claws which need to be checked and trimmed regularly, a task which is very tricky with semi-feral cats.

The decision was then made to release them at the sanctuary where our experienced team could closely monitor them. To achieve this our 'man that can' Allan, purpose built their new chalet where they could all live together, as they are a closely bonded family.

After a few short weeks inside their new home they were released, and were initially very clumsy but curious. They have quickly adapted to exploring the great outdoors and have lots of fun climbing the trees and chasing the goats around!!

Gingers!!

Update on the Puppy Farm Cats:

The remaining cats have been released for sometime now to wander and live freely at the sanctuary. After much perseverance and hard work from the sanctuary team, many are now becoming friendly and some have even set up camp in the cattery kitchen! Here is a cute picture of Colonel K, Clementine and Nero keeping an eye on us all!

Are you looking for a Cat?

As always, we are keen to find homes for our many rescued cats some of which are featured on the Animals for homing page.

Visitors to the Sanctuary are very warmly welcomed, and we are open daily from 1.00pm - 5pm but in order to ensure the safety and well-being of some of our more nervous animal residents, do please telephone first: 01424 882198.

It costs the Trust thousands of pounds each month to care for the animals at Greenancres. Our Sanctuary is funded solely by our charity shop and your kindness and generosity and we want you to know how much CHAT and the animals appreciate your help.

Supper Time

Waiting for Supper!

Dotted all over the sanctuary grounds are sheds and chalets donated by our supporters especially for the rescued cats that have been released at the sanctuary to live their lives freely - they are all welcome to come into the main house if they wish, but some of the more nervous cats prefer to have their living quarters in the chalets with their chums!

Bluebells!

As well as a Sanctuary for our domestic animals, our 12 acre site also has ancient woodland. This is perfect for our cats to wander about in and play, but also acts as a peaceful haven and sanctuary for other wildlife, we regularly see foxes, badgers, deer, pheasants, woodcock and even boar at certain times of the year.

The sanctuary is simply beautiful in spring, here are a couple of pictures for you to enjoy!
